The Italian SMEs already using AI (and what they got out of it)
While many still ask whether AI is ready for a small business, some Italian SMEs have already put it into production: T-Trade Group (39 people, an in-house AI assistant), DMM and FormBags on the factory floor. With data from the Politecnico di Milano observatory and Zucchetti, and why 76% of the field still being open is an opportunity, not a warning.

While many still ask whether AI is «ready» for a small business, some Italian SMEs have stopped asking: they put it into production, inside real processes, and the results show. Not multinationals with lab-sized budgets, but companies of forty, a hundred, two hundred people — your own scale. Here is who is already doing it, by name, and what they got out of it. Every case below is public and verifiable: none is our client, and precisely for that reason it is the most honest proof that AI in an Italian SME isn't a promise — it's already the record.
T-Trade Group: 39 people, an in-house AI assistant
Start with the cleanest example. T-Trade Group, Falconara Marittima (AN): 39 employees, €9.4M in revenue (2023), 18 patents and 8% of turnover reinvested in research. An SME in every sense — and it built «Titti», a B2B service assistant, on AIDAPT's CAITY framework, integrated with its LabelingWeb platform. The point that matters for you: this is no giant with a data-science department. It's a company your size that decided to give its customers an intelligent interface to its services, and did it. (case published by SMAU, October 2024)
From the factory floor: DMM and FormBags
In manufacturing — the heart of made in Italy — AI is already on the production floor, not in the slides.
- DMM (Montecalvo in Foglia, PU) — metal finishing, roughly €12.3M in revenue (2024) and between 100 and 199 staff — built a «cyber-artisanal digital twin»: laser scanners and AI that digitize and reproduce hand-made finishes, the ones that used to depend on a single craftsman's know-how. It won an SMAU Innovation Award. The meaning is sharp: here AI doesn't replace the artisan, it captures the talent so it isn't lost. (case published by SMAU Marche, June 2025)
- FormBags (Formigine, MO) — 250 million bags a year, more than 200 people across two European plants — brought a voice and natural-language interface (vendor Opseed) onto shop-floor tablets. The operator speaks, the system understands: process control and the continuity of know-how from one shift to the next both improve. (case published by SMAU Milano, November 2025)
Neither has made a percentage return public, and we won't invent one: what's documented is the real deployment, in production, in Italian companies your size.
The real figure: the field is still almost all open
Here comes the part that should make you move fast, not hesitate. According to the Politecnico di Milano observatory (2026), 76% of Italian SMEs have not yet invested in AI and have no plans to; only 8% have an active or experimental project. Translated: whoever moves now isn't chasing anyone — they're clearing the path. Among professional firms the signal is even sharper — Zucchetti's «Osservatorio Professionisti» (2025) finds that 81% recognize AI's concrete potential for efficiency and new opportunities, 60% expect it to change how they work, three in four (75%) are already betting on diversifying their services, and 31% will increase software spending over the next twelve months. (Zucchetti sells AI software, so read those numbers as an interested party's — but the underlying picture, a sector on the move, is real.)
What they have in common (and what you can copy)
Look at what these companies didn't do: they didn't «adopt AI» in the abstract, they didn't buy licenses for everyone and hope something would happen. They took a single point — customer support, a finish, line control — and built something that works around it. It's the most replicable lesson there is: AI in an SME doesn't pay off when you scatter it everywhere, it pays off when you graft it into one precise process and make that process run better than before. What you need isn't a multinational's budget — it's picking the right point and carrying it all the way through.
Where we graft in
These companies have an advantage an SME often lacks: someone who carries the redesign all the way into production. That's exactly our craft — choosing with you the department and the use case where AI genuinely pays off, and grafting it in until the new way of working is simply the way. We don't sell you yet another license: we build the missing piece between «we have AI» and «AI changed our numbers». The AI-readiness assessment is free and tells you which department to start from; then, if it makes sense, we talk.
The cases and data cited (T-Trade Group, DMM, FormBags via SMAU; Politecnico di Milano SME observatory 2026; Zucchetti Osservatorio Professionisti 2025) are public and refer to third-party companies and research: they are not Innesti Digital clients or the results of our work. They serve to show that AI adoption in Italian SMEs is already real. Revenue and size figures come from the sources cited; where a company hasn't made an economic return public, we don't report one.
Every resource grows out of the research we do for SMEs and the products we build ourselves: cited sources, a method we state openly, no claim you cannot check.
